The Mocanita - a real forest steam rail...

Let us lead you to a very unique place of Europe. And this time we are not just informing you about the certain region, but we would like to introduce a conserved piece of the history. Its nick name is Mocanita, but you may meet it with the name: Vaser Valley Railway or CFF Viseu de Sus.

This beautiful and lovely railway system still operates in Maramures, North Romania. It climbs through the picturesque Vaser Valley between the formations of the Carpathian Mountains. Naturally it would be very easy to say it's beautiful or simply looks like you were in a fairy tale, but since I'm a snail journalist wannabe I cannot settle for this short statement. Let me give you all the details that, I believe, might interest you, guys...

You have to know that the Mocanita is the world's last real forest steam railway. No question, it runs on narrow gauge track (760 mm). It goes through vast forests, where are no roads or villages, but bears and wolves are native.

The purpose of the train is primarily timber industrial, and only the second purpose of it is tourism. Only in 2010 around 13.300 people travelled with this lovely steam train. Moreover, beside the regular operation and schedule of the Mocanita you have the chance to book a date or a day, and use the Mocanita for

personal purposes. (Of course you cannot change its line or things like that, but you have the chance to book it for your group(s).)

The Mocanita’s regular touristic transportation is available from spring to autumn every year. For the latest details and departure times always check the site of Mocanita. And there is a lovely solution for the chow hounds: perfect and full catering service is available on the train!

The steam train leaves the station CFF Viseu de Sus at 9 am regularly. On this little map below you can see the trail map. The starting point (station) is CFF Viseu de Sus, goes to Paltin (21,6 km) and comes back directly on the same track, of course. Unfortunately, it can’t go through the whole valley, to Comanu for instance, because it would be too long. It would take about 7 hours for the Mocanita, and with returning to Viseu de Sus it would be 14 hours without any breaks. Therefore it goes to Paltin and have a more or less long break. (Usually 1-1,5 hour.) That means the whole journey takes about 6 or 7 hours all together.

The last Romanian forest railway - thanks to tourism - has a future. And I also very much hope that I can visit this beautiful place. Once you smell the steam of these engines, you will know that you are exactly at the spot where you should be! The landscape that you will get to know with the help of these beauties, is almost indescribable. The photos may help you!
